Guidelines for Haddenham Pantomime Directors

• Prospective directors usually write the script they wish to direct, however, you may work with a scriptwriter if you only want to direct.
• The director must be DBS checked and hold a valid chaperone licence
• Any rehearsal assistants/co-directors/musical or dance assistants must be DBS checked
• Anyone who auditions gets a part, regardless of ability or appearance. Children must be aged 9 and over to comply with legal requirements. Inexperienced actors and singers should be placed in roles which enable them to learn from others and improve their skills.
• Auditions usually take place in the first week of September. Rehearsals take place at the Arkenstall Centre and take the form of two weekdays and one Sunday afternoon per week, from 1st October.
• Only those who can sing should be given solos. Solos should be avoided unless you have experienced confident singers who want to do it. Ensemble songs are preferred as everyone gets to be involved.
• Content of rehearsals and teaching methods are the responsibility of the director
• If you do not have experience teaching people to sing, please appoint an experienced musical director.
• If you do not have experience with dance teaching or choreography, please appoint an experienced choreographer.
• Regular meetings between the Director and creative team are essential to ensure the smooth running of the show.
• The Director’s job is to direct – other production duties are fulfilled by the Production Team.
• Although the copyright remains with the author, as this is a commission piece, the Arkenstall Centre retains ownership of the script during the production. Should the writer/director leave the production, the Arkenstall Centre will still produce the pantomime using the script provided, and may make any necessary changes to said script or its direction to improve the performance.
